Description:
Installation of a commercially made residential storm window product of the extruded aluminum type with flush mount. The guidelines below are very general. Always read, understand and follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. The storm window is mounted in the storm bed, also referred to as the blind stop and sill. This treatment is not for storms face-mounted on the casing boards.

Typical Guidelines:

Assure the existing casing trim or brick molding and blind stop around the window opening are solid and securely fastened. Be sure the sill of the window opening is solid and slopes to the exterior for water and condensation migration to the outside.

Measure the exterior storm bed opening. Follow manufacturers recommendations for measuring. Make horizontal measurements for width at the top, the middle and the bottom of the opening. Similarly, for the height measure at the right, center and left. Determine if the opening is out of square. (See figure1).

Select a color that matches the sash color or use direct to metal oil based paint to match the sash color. If painting, it's best to do so in a controlled shop environment rather than after installation. Spraying will give a better appearance than brushing.

Assure the mounting surface at the sill and around all three surfaces of the blind stop (storm bed) are clean and smooth.

Use a paintable sealant or caulk to bed the storm into the storm bed without covering weep holes along the bottom edge of the rail system.

Best Work:
Manufacturer's instructions were followed. Casings and blind stops are secure. Sills are pitched/angled to the outside. Storm is installed neatly and fills the entire storm bed. Weep holes on bottom rail of storm are fully opened and not caulked shut. Operable glass and screen panels move smoothly. Paintable caulk was used to bed the storm window frame. Painting of aluminum was sprayed in the shop with proper fill thickness and even appearance.

Adequate Work:
Casings and blind stops are secure. Sills are pitched/angled to the outside. Storm is installed neatly with a few areas of wood showing in the storm bed. Weep holes on bottom rail of storm are fully open and not caulked shut. Operable glass and screen panels move smoothly. Paintable caulk was used to bed the storm window frame. Painting of aluminum was done after installation and shows brush strokes.

Inadequate Work:
Storm is not installed neatly. Storm frame was not caulked to the storm bed. Weep holes at bottom of storm rail have been caulk shut. Casings and blind stops are loose. Sills are level or pitched/angled to the inside. Operable glass and screen panels don't move smoothly. Pure silicone caulk was used to bed the storm window frame. The aluminum frame is a different color than the window sashes.
