Who can contribute dollars?

Postby sschoberg » December 24th, 2011, 3:06 pm

You've brought up dollar contributions. At the summit there was quite a discussion about who may contribute. We would of course like to contribute to this collaborative, but in order to do so it would need to be through our company. Have the founders decided to allow this? Has there been any rethinking?

The following can definitely contribute dollars:

- Any individual person
- Any non-profit organization
- Any governmental body or agency

The following cannot contribute dollars:

-Any business manufacturing or selling products used in the fields of building construction, renovation and window preservation. (The purpose of excluding contributions from this source is to avoid the promotion of products and the "conflict of interest" that might arise.)

The above would seem to allow individuals operating as sole proprietorships to make dollar contributions, even if their main business is providing window preservation services, so long as their main business is not manufacturing and selling products.

It is unclear whether or not formally organized businesses (partnerships, corporations, etc.) whose main business is offering window preservation services can contribute. Individuals working for, or owning these businesses can contribute dollars as individual persons.

We definitely have to get this cleared up, because there may be a lot of window specialists out there who want to contribute dollars.

Bob Yapp is providing our guidance on this, so I'll ask him to chime in here with some clarifications.

Any individual can contribute money as well as not-for-profits and/or foundations. No contributions will be accepted from any company that sells products or services in the window restoration or repair business. For instance, Steve and his son could each donate individually but not from their window restoration business. I think this is clean and clear and keeps a level of seperation between selling product and donations which present the least conflict of interest.

Also, any governmental agency can donate.
